Office 2010 : Compatibility Inspector Tool & Environment Assessment Tool

Microsoft has recently released 2 tools that are helpful for upgrading to Office 2010.

1. Office 2010 Tool: Office Environment Assessment Tool

The Office Environment Assessment Tool (OEAT) is a tool to help your enterprise determine the types of add-ins and the extent of usage for the add-ins on your user’s desktops. It also determines the applications that interact with Office (via COM) and provides a summary report of the general state of the systems scanned.

Office Environment Assessment Tool identifies:

  • Currently installed applications and installation environment
  • Add-ins currently in use by Office clients
  • Programs that are not registered as add-ins but still interact with Office programs
  • Report: Environmental assessment (potential upgrade issues)
  • Report: Add-ins assessment–list of third party programs and information about the compatibility of those programs with Microsoft Office 2010

Post scanning, when you click on Compile results. The data is exported to a Excel File (.xlsx), with the following sheets

  • Summary Report
  • All Installed Addins
  • Addins Not Shipped With Office
  • Average Disk Space
  • 32bit vs. 64bit

2. Office 2010 Tool: Compatibility Inspector

The Compatibility Inspector compares existing (legacy) code against the Microsoft Office 2010 object model to identify possible code issues. It is used to check if the addins that we use now, would be compatible with Office 2010 edition.

Supported OS : Windows 7; Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 2
Supported Office : Office 97, Office 2000, Office XP , Office 2003, Office 2007
Size : 1.9 MB

Guide : Microsoft Office Code Compatibility Inspector user’s guide – Google URL Shortener

URL Shortener takes long URLs and squeezes them into fewer characters to make a link easier to share, tweet, or email to friends. There a lot of websites that provide this service at the moment and popular ones like

Google’s new offering is only available through its own products i.e. Google Toolbar and Feebburner, according to the blog post on the subject.

The benefits of using Google URL Shortener are

  • Stability: Google’s scalable, multi-datacenter infrastructure provides great uptime and a reliable service to our users.
  • Security: As we do with web search, shortened URLs are automatically checked to detect sites that may be malicious and warn users when the short URL resolves to such sites.
  • Speed: At Google we like fast products and we’ve worked hard to ensure this service is quick. We’ll continue to iterate and improve the speed of Google Url Shortener.

It’s arguable as to whether or not those points provide a big gain over other services, as the more popular ones tend to have those exact features anyway.
The site has nothing much to offer (as the service is limited to a couple products), but you can test it out by using the Google Toolbar or FeedBurner.

“First Look: Microsoft Office 2010” – A free eBook from Microsoft

For a limited time you can download this free e-book without stepping through any registration. First Look: Microsoft Office 2010, by Katherine Murray, offers 14 chapters of early content, organized like so:

Part I, “Envision the Possibilities,” introduces you to the changes in Office 2010 and shows you how you can make the most of the new features to fit the way you work today. Chapter 1, “Welcome to Office 2010,” gives you a play-by-play introduction to new features; Chapter 2, “Express Yourself Effectively and Efficiently,” details the great feature enhancements and visual effects throughout the applications; and Chapter 3, “Work Anywhere with Office 2010,” explores the flexibility factor by presenting a set of scenarios that enable users to complete their work no matter where their path takes them.

Part II, “Hit the Ground Running,” focuses on each of the Office 2010 applications in turn, spotlighting the key new features and showing how they relate to the whole. These chapters provide a how-to guide for many of the top features you’re likely to use right off the bat, and they offer inspiring ideas on how to get the most from your favorite applications.

Part III, “Next Steps with Office 2010,” zooms up to the big picture and provides examples to help you think through interoperability. How often do you use the various Office applications together? Customer research shows that people often don’t realize how well the applications work together as a complete system—which means they might be laboring over items they could easily incorporate from somewhere else. This part of the book provides examples for integrating the applications and explores Office 2010 security and training opportunities, as well.

Windows Live Messenger 2010 Leaked Screenshots

The screenshots of the new Windows Live Messenger 2010 have been leaked on the internet. Its a part of the Wave 4 of Windows Live which is expected to release in first quarter of 2010. Neowin has posted some screenshots of Windows Live Messenger 2010 and Windows Live Writer 2010.

These screenshots are of early BETAs and the final UI would be  somewhat different

The main Messenger window that contains your contacts has changed to an excent. On the left hand side now you see something called as a "social stream" of updates which is provided by Windows Live. These are updates from your Messenger contacts and the data is provided by Windows Live Now these updates are seen at the bottom of the messenger, also at the top of a conversation window. Windows Live Messenger aims to add to this by using the "social stream" as a showcase for your contacts updates. Providing your friends have including their Facebook, Twitter and Blog posts into Windows Live then you will see this in the stream.

Windows Live Messenger 2010 will also include tabbed messenger conversations, a much awaited functionality for Windows Live Messenger.

The ribbon interface would be seen in Windows Live Writer Wave 4 also in other Windows Live applications.

Many are hopeful for some Wave 4 announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool Re-released

Back in October, Microsoft released the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, which was under a lot of issues for violating the GPL. Thus Microsoft decided to re build the same tool but as an open source.

Only a month later, the access to the tool has now been restored and a new Microsoft Codeplex project has been stood up, housing all the source code for all to consume.

Another awesome feature is that its also an offline tool i.e. it doesn’t download any files from the internet when you try to install  Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. Thus we dont need an internet connection to install this tool.

The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file on a USB flash drive or a DVD. To create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive, download the ISO file and then run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Once this is done, you can install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or DVD.

The ISO file contains all the Windows 7 installation files combined into a single uncompressed file. When you download the ISO file, you need to copy it to some medium in order to install Windows 7. This tool allows you to create a copy of the ISO file to a USB flash drive or a DVD. To install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive or DVD, all you need to do is insert the USB flash drive into your USB port or insert your DVD into your DVD drive and run Setup.exe from the root folder on the drive.

Note: You cannot install Windows 7 from the ISO file until you copy it to a USB flash drive or DVD with the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool and install from there.

The copy of the ISO file that the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool creates is bootable. Bootable media allows you to install Windows 7 without having to first run an existing operating system on your machine. If you change the boot order of drives in your computer’s BIOS, you can run the Windows 7 installation directly from your USB flash drive or DVD when you turn on your computer. Please see the documentation for your computer for information on how to change the BIOS boot order of drives.

Steps for using the tool
